Disability and the Prescription for Change

Now that you've read the Riley essay for class, do you feel that the disabled are fairly treated/portrayed by the media?  Do you feel that Riley's suggestions are correct?  What would you suggest that differs from Riley's argument?

  1. I believe for the most part they aren't technically treated bad or good in the sense that it's never a rude story about the ones with disabilities. But the media puts them into a category that seems to cause everyone to be in aw of the things they are able to do but not them as everyday people which is where I have my biggest problem with the reading.

No,disabed people are potrayed by the media in a way that makes the public ponder of what they have. In other words, the media makes the public feel pity for disabled people.

  3. I feel like the media put the disabled people into their own category by just speaking about them. The media makes them seem like they are not capable of functioning with people without disabilities. If they could do a report without discussing what's really wrong with them (except if they want the people to know), I would be more willing to read a newspaper about them. They are a lot of people with hardships and we don't give them names. I think of it like when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana and the media was calling the people "refugees" despite them being Citizens of the United States.
